- “If you can’t say anything nice don’t say it at all” – Mum
- “Always trust in God” – Grandma
- Grandad taught me things like how to tile a bathroom, how to fit double glazed windows, how to change a car tire and although it was via the phone he talked my Mum and I through how to fit a door – we’d started but couldn’t work out what the problem was – we described it to him and he knew exactly what was up and how to fix it.
- Dad taught me things like the difference between a weed and a plant, when certain veggies and fruit are ready to pick – there’s a cherry tree in my parent’s garden – every year we’d be out there picking them.
- Mum taught me to sew by hand and by machine, knit, crochet, embroider and cross stitch. I’m sure it was her who taught me how to bake cakes and make biscuits. Each Christmas she’d make homemade mince pies and I’d often help her roll out the pastry and assemble the pies – we’d often make a mini jam tart at the very end with the left over pastry.
