Well hello. It’s September 30th and I’m supposed to be getting ready for bed. But I saw someone post a fabulous rainbow sock as like a “kicking off Socktober today” post and that was it. Brain on a tangent.
Having “dashed” around the apartment to group my sock-related WIPs, I have a rough starting point.
So, I think I currently have 7 pairs of socks on the go. I know. Not good, but some are either “second sock syndrome” or “partway through sock 1”. And 2 are “frog and forget about”.
We’ll start with the Frog and Forget…
Toe Up Lidl Socks
This is more of a frog and restart than forget. The yarn came from Lidl (funnily enough…). It’s a pack of 2 x 75g balls. The idea being that you can knit a pair of socks for one “pack”. The yarn is DK weight. I wanted to try and use all the yarn from the ball rather than getting to the end and having lots left over. So I went with toe-up socks. However, my toe-up skills are questionable and they just seem to be wide. So… these are on the frog and forget pile. I think I will frog and cast on again as cuff down. (Or wait until Liz visits next weekend and get her verdict…). (not on Ravelry yet but I am following this pattern by Jo Torr).
Speckle Something (Aarhus Socks)
It’s become a bit of a thing. We go on holiday. Chris finds a theme park and then finds me a yarn shop to make sure I am suitably prepared for my “bag lady” duties. (Bag lady duties involves me sitting on a bench or under a tree and listening to a podcast, audiobook or music while knitting and the boys go on all the rides). So, the yarn was bought in Aarhus this summer at NetGarn. Socks were cast on but I think I needed a second ball so I think this sock will be frogged and repurposed to I need to see if I can get a second ball. (So maybe I come back to that one later in the month).
Pause here. 7 minutes until lights out. (I have work tomorrow. 5am alarm is not my friend somedays).
Good morning (pretend it’s still 30th September…)
Mum’s Socks
These are straight forward. I’m following this pattern. I used this for the first pair of socks I made for Mum because they are ribbed they have a bit more give in them. Mum picked the yarn for this new pair of socks. It’s knitting up smaller than I think we both expected but it’s fine. (I hope!) (Ravelry)
Stripy Socks
I’m not sure where I got this yarn. I imagine I probably adopted it during a yarn shop trip even if I didn’t really need it. They are grey and colourful and supposed to sort of fade from grey to white between the stripes of colour but so far they are just very grey lol. (Another that needs to be added… Vanilla Socks though – the pattern is My First Cuff Down Socks by Katelyn Burk)
Alice Socks
A while back I bought The Second Drawer Down book from Verity at Truly Hooked. I decided it was about time that I actually made a pair of the socks – I decided to do the Alice socks from the book. The yarn turned out to be a bit busy to show off the lace but it still works and I can still practice the pattern. (Ravelry Pattern Page)
Heart Warming Socks
This is a lovely, cute pattern from Nicola at Tea, Cake and Make. I decided to use the yarn I was given for my birthday along with some other yarn I had bought with a gift voucher that I think was also from my birthday. This took a few attempts as the first attempt I got my main colour and contrasting colour the wrong way round so that wasn’t working….
Then when I tried the right way around, the combination didn’t work either – the multi-colour one was then too similar to the main colour so it didn’t pop like I had hoped it would. So attempt number 3 is definitely working better but while I’m still on the top bit around the cuff and it’s involving carrying extra yarn and reading a pattern on the go, it got left at home and fell into Area 51 (for the UFOs – unfinished objects….lol). (Ravelry)
Flock Socks
Flock Socks is a pattern by Hanna at Germander Cottage Crafts. I started these back in 2023 and I got through the first sock but never got any further. I have the remainder of the yarn tucked in the first sock so that I couldn’t lose it. (Ravelry)
SneakPeek Socks
Another pair where I’d got through sock 1 and not gone to sock 2. So, this one again I’ll be trying to finish. These are all knitted in one sock yarn apart from the small flash of mohair towards the top. While I am not 100% sure what I did with the mohair, I can start the sock and come back to the mohair bit either at a later date or get creative with some other mohair – or just frog that bit. (Ravelry)
Okay, I think I’m there. That’s the recap of each one, there aren’t photos right now but hopefully as I work through each pair there will be some pictures. It won’t be a post every day kind of thing but I will post when I can. (I apologise for any spelling mistakes. I’ve been typing on my phone or on my MacBook. It’s missing it’s E key and so I’m having to get creative or risk stabbing my finger on the bracket that normally holds the key lol.
