The Friday Read: No 10

The Friday Read

Your Favourite Classic

I’m not sure I really have one to be honest. I keep trying to read Austen as if it would make me brainier or something lol. Then again Austen is the 1700/1800s answer to the modern day chick flick so you would think I’d like it lol.

I even had a look at “What Makes A Classic Novel” to make sure that I was on the right track lol. I found the comment

I think a classic book is one that outlasts time-people today can still read Jane Austen and enjoy it because they relate to the characters, or read Dumas because they enjoy the development of plot and characterisation. That’s what makes it really classic, but I guess the term tends to be used on books that have just managed to survive being around for a while too. Say a century maybe?

So yeah I think Austen or Dickens would be my favourite classic author but I actually need to read the whole of one of the books to be able to confirm which my favourite classic is!

I think I’ve appreciated Austen more as I’ve got older. I find Dickens really hard to read – I’ve tried a few of his and given up after a few pages because I find his style so dull and heavy. Anthony Trollope is quite fun – lots of gossip and romance but with good strong characters and a sprinkle of scandal!
